King Philanthropies

King Philanthropies

King Philanthropies is a small but mighty family foundation seeking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the world’s poorest people. Its leaders recognized that they could amplify the organization’s impact by transmitting their rigorous, research-based approach to non-profit leaders. Toward this end, it retained Elixir to help them craft more accessible language, organize their content and create a handsome new website that felt more aligned with their brand. Halfway through the website redesign, King Philanthropies asked us to redesign their logo to unveil with their new digital presence.

Their original site was simple and populated with photos that didn’t accurately represent the current direction, weight, and breadth of the organization. New employees (and design firms) interviewing for jobs had a hard time deciphering exactly what exactly the organization did or how they did it.

The challenge for Elixir in conjunction with the King Philanthropies team was to accurately convey the many King efforts that live under one umbrella but have different hierarchies within the organization and different audiences. In the redesign, we aimed to showcase King Philanthropies’ rigor in their site redesign, starting with the homepage featuring their mission statement, which is both ambitious and exact—detailing precisely what they hope to achieve, how, and by when. Users are then invited to a walkthrough of King’s six initiative areas where their work is focused.

Part of King Philanthropies’ mission is to share their insights and findings with the global social sector community. The site redesign included a broad expansion of content, in order to better showcase King Philanthropies, their on-the-ground impact, and best practices in management and leadership in the nonprofit sector. The site also included an expansion of King Philanthropies’ spotlight on its Global Scholars community, with articles, podcasts, and video interviews, all searchable via content type, university, or home country.

When asked to redesign the King Philanthropies logo, we wanted to encapsulate their rigor and focus on data. The arrow on the K hints at an x|y graph with an upward trajectory for positive impact and results, while the square border with an opening represents breaking out of the confines of poverty, with King Philanthropies backing the most impactful social impact leaders.
