Gladstone Institutes

Gladstone Institutes

In anticipation of their 50th anniversary in 2029, Gladstone Institutes approached us for help with a massive fundraising push aimed at expanding its facility, breakthrough research teams, and programs. The assignment was to create a brand identity for a campaign that unfolds over five years, related to Gladstone’s visual language, but deviating enough to stand out.

There are many organizations that are working in the same areas of science, but what makes Gladstone special is their size and culture. They are relatively small and have fostered a frictionless environment in the labs — making them nimble, independent, and able to make advances quickly. Gladstone is home to Nobel Prize-winning research and some of the most critical scientific breakthroughs of the century, including the discoveries of both CRISPR and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.

As part of its campaign, the Gladstone development team needed an engaging printed case statement. Rather than create a potentially dry multi-page document, Elixir proposed a unique dimensional format that put the potential Gladstone building expansion front and center. The piece shared high-level messaging and goals while directing the audience online for more in-depth and updatable information.

The accompanying website elaborates on the printed case statement, outlining the importance of this moment in time and the potential breakthroughs waiting to be unlocked at Gladstone. The experience is designed as a scrolling narrative — something between a website and a film — where users can navigate freely, or be guided through the storytelling as it walks through the chapters.

For the landing page, we partnered with photographer Henrik Kam to shoot drone footage of the space, giving people a peek into the activity going on in the many labs.

The website expands upon each of the four funding priorities: 1) building and staff expansion, 2) funding high-risk/high-reward research, 3) the potential of AI and getting the faculty the technology they need, and 4) translational programs (drug development that brings us one step further towards cures).

It was also important that the website make the case for Why Gladstone?
And while there are many things that could be said, we worked to visualize Gladstone’s outsize impact for its size, its collaborative environment, and willingness to take on high-risk/high-reward challenges.

Lastly, the website also houses a short film, featuring interviews with scientists and donors, for which we created some accompanying animations.
